"I killed a killer. She killed an innocent Goat. I was right. She was wrong. It was very different."

Spike shrugged. "She's still a person. Maybe not innocent, but it's still a life, and you ended it."

"A life that's sole purpose was to bring pain and misery to Oz. I don't regret it."

[bigbad]

Spike shook his head. "Things are never that simple, love. It'd be nice if they were, but that's the thing about humans. They're complicated. And they change all the bloody time."

"There was no changing her. She was a monster."

[bigbad]

"A monster," Spike repeated. Then his features shifted. His eyes turned yellow and his forehead wrinkled while his teeth came out into fangs. "Like me, you mean?"

She gritted her teeth and bit back her startled reaction. "No. Not like you. Or maybe like you, I don't know, but you know I'd hardly be the type to call someone a monster based on physical conditions."

Spike shrugged. "It's what I am. And a few years back there are those who'd have said I couldn't change. Hell, I might have said it. And yet." He spread his arms and let his features melt back to human. "Here I am."

"Perhaps. It's hard to say, but her reign had to end. So did the Wizard's. Tell me, in the book, how did the Wizard's fate end? I know it might not be what really happened, but it would be nice to know, since he was revealed to be a fraud, you said?"

"To Dorothy and her friends. He left Oz in a hot air balloon and the Scarecrow took charge. Then a girl called Ozma took over later."

"Ozma? Well, I suppose in a fairy story she would come back. It sounds like a good ending, though."

[bigbad]

"No, that was in the sequels." Spike paused. "Not that I read those." Well, maybe a few. "You've heard of her?"

"Of course I've heard of her. Ozma Tippetarius. She was to be the ruler of Oz, but she went missing. I think the Wizard had her killed to get her out of the way of his own reign."

[bigbad]

"Think things would be better under her?"

"They wouldn't be worse. And...things were better before the Wizard came, so I'd assume that if things were returned to how they should be, that the good things we had could be brought back."

[bigbad]

"And how long ago did the Wizard come?"

[vinkus-witch.livejournal.com]

"He came twice. Once when...before I was born. The second time when I was only a child, he came in a balloon and was instantly hailed as a wizard."

[bigbad]

"So... for all you know it could have been bad before he showed up as well."

"It was gradual, after he came. He couldn't just change everything overnight. He gradually denied Animals more and more rights, he drained the Quadling swamps where I was living at the time to mine the rubies, and later went after the Arjikis. All of these things were fine when I was a child. Animals could hold jobs, and the Quandling swamps were healthy and thriving."

[bigbad]

"Well, it might have been worse before. Power vacuum and whatnot." Spike shrugs. "Everything's complicated with politics."

"What power vacuum? Oz was ruled...well, by Ozma's regent, but there was a government in place before he came along and killed those in power." And she was convinced the Wizard had, despite the lack of evidence.

"Do you know that? In the books he wasn't particularly murderous. Just stupid."

"They were story books. They also didn't mention the draining of the Quadling swamplands. But no, I was a child at the time, and even though I've seen quite a few things in mirrors, I never saw what happened to Ozma."
