So, we've got another fresh wave of new people. Hullo, new people. I'm Spike, the good guy vampire. Welcome to the Barge. I'd answer any questions you've got, but there are far better people out there to play tour guide. So... good luck with the redeeming and being redeemed stuff. I'm sure you'll all have an incredibly interesting time here.

As for the new vampire that apparently decided to bite someone, and any other new vampires, if they showed up. There's blood in the kitchen, plenty for everyone. Stick with that, it saves us the trouble of finding you and hauling you down to Zero, or just staking you if you resist too much. Just behave, all right?

[He grins a bit.]

If it helps, I'm not like most vampires.

I'm not sure what that means, given the circumstances.

[She can't help but smile, herself. She's heard about Rayne and Claudia already.]

What are most vampires like?

In my world? Soulless killers, with two exceptions.

Let me guess. One of those exceptions is you.

Good guess. Yeah, I'm pretty bloody special.

[Said with a smile, of course.]

[He grins right back.]

Modesty's never been a big virtue of mine.

[Oh Spike. Why so amusing. She rests her cheek in her hand.]

Not being a soulless killer is big achievement. I always say you should take due credit for your accomplishments.

[He raises his eyebrows.]

It's more difficult than you'd think, love. Worked bloody hard to earn my soul back.

I didn't realize a soul was that tangible.

It's something inside you, but when you don't have it... there's a big difference. Right and wrong aren't exactly clear. Sure, you might know the basics, like that killing's bad, but you don't care. You revel in destruction and violence and evil because it's fun, and you don't care how it affects the people that aren't you.

How was it returned?

I fought for it.

Why did you want that vulnerability?

It impresses the ladies.

[Actually, there was only one lady, and Spike was more worried about never hurting her again than impressing her, especially once he got the soul. But it is a vulnerability, and a deeply personal story, and Spike doesn't really want to get into it.]

[He doesn't have a soul. He remembers having one, though, and he was a different person then. He doesn't want to be replaced by that person when his warden does whatever he's planning. They hurt too easily, and too deeply.

Perhaps it isn’t the source the matters, but the fun and the feeling. We're monsters, Monsieur, you just wish to masquerade as something different.
